Court upholds prison sentence for violent offender recognized as a recidivist
The Panevėžys Regional Court, having examined the criminal case on appeal, issued a ruling upholding the verdict against Giedrius Vieržbickas, a resident of the Pasvalys district. The man was convicted of intentional violent crimes against his partner and for evading a previously court-ordered criminal impact measure. Despite the convict's request for a lighter sentence, he will have to serve a final prison term of two years and six months.
According to the case file, in the spring of 2025, G. Vieržbickas carried out two brutal violent attacks against his family member—his partner. During the first incident, the convict intentionally struck the woman in the face and strangled her. A second outburst of violence occurred a month later: the woman was beaten and kicked, and after she fell, her body was trampled. The victim suffered broken ribs, lung damage, and lacerations to her head.
In addition to the violent crimes, G. Vieržbickas was convicted of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated, despite a prior court order banning him from driving for 5 years.
On December 2, 2025, the Biržai Chamber of the Panevėžys District Court found him guilty under three articles of the Criminal Code. After consolidating the sentences and applying a one-third reduction provided by law, he was handed a final sentence of 2 years and 6 months of imprisonment. The convict was also ordered to pay 666.03 EUR in material damages to the Panevėžys Territorial Health Insurance Fund.
In his appeal, G. Vieržbickas requested a mitigation of the sentence, arguing that he had reconciled with the victim, that she had no further claims, and that he himself felt remorse and wished to seek treatment for alcohol addiction. However, the judicial panel of the Panevėžys Regional Court rejected these arguments.
The court emphasized that the convict is a recidivist—he committed new intentional crimes while having an active criminal record. G. Vieržbickas’ history of criminal behavior is long: this is his twelfth time being prosecuted, and previous lighter sentences and liberty restrictions yielded no positive results.
"The victim's forgiveness or lack of claims does not remove the convict's liability, as the criminal acts committed against the same person have systematically worsened, indicating the convict's danger to society and his unwillingness to change his lifestyle," the judicial panel noted.
The ruling of the Panevėžys Regional Court takes effect from the date of its announcement.
