On Thursday, following a closed court hearing to examine the appeal filed by Justina Sadauskienė’s defense counsel against the extension of her detention, the Panevėžys Regional Court dismissed the appeal – the suspect remains in custody.

A three-judge panel of the Regional Court upheld the ruling of the Panevėžys District Court, extending the remand in custody imposed on Justina Sadauskienė for three months, until September 21.

The judicial panel noted that the pre-trial investigation material contains sufficient evidence to justify extending the remand measure – detention in custody – for the suspect, Justina Sadauskienė.

The court was satisfied that milder preventive measures than remand in custody would be insufficient to ensure the suspect’s participation in the criminal proceedings and to achieve the other objectives of criminal procedure.

Furthermore, the grounds for ordering and subsequently extending the detention have not lapsed or changed; namely, in the court's view, the suspect may obstruct the proceedings, flee, hide from justice, or commit new criminal offenses.

This ruling of the Panevėžys Regional Court is final and not subject to appeal.
