Court opens case on murder of Polish football fan in Panevėžys
On Monday, the Panevėžys Regional Court began hearing a criminal case in which a 35-year-old resident of Panevėžys is accused of murdering a Polish citizen.
The tragic incident, which is being investigated by the court, occurred on July 23, 2024, in Panevėžys. After a football match between Białystok's "Jagiellonia" and local "Panevėžys" teams, an aggressive Polish fan got into a scuffle with the accused. The latter punched the victim in the jaw, causing him to fall onto concrete paving stones.
The victim was taken to Republican Panevėžys Hospital but left before doctors could examine him. Later, police patrols spotted him at a bus stop and, due to obvious signs of facial bruising, transported him back to the hospital. After a head injury was diagnosed, he underwent surgery, but the man died three weeks later.
In today's hearing, the accused told the court that he fully admits his guilt for the crime he is charged with. He will give his testimony after all witnesses have been questioned.
Today, one of the victims, the sister of the murdered fan, gave testimony to the court. She has filed a civil claim for 40,000 euros due to her brother's death.
The next hearing is scheduled for June 5. During this session, the court plans to question the murdered fan's mother and a witness who had traveled to the football match in Panevėžys with the victim.
